From the section
"CHOOSING A LIGHT"

"Don't get sucked into buying a light based on its wattage. Watts aren't a measure of light output, but of power consumption. Just because a light consumes more power doesn't mean it's brighter." "Dual-beam systems with independently adjustable beams are the way to go."

From the section "THE BEST LIGHTING SYSTEMS"

"We picked these for pure light output and performance price no object. These are the lights to use for nighttime training, with beams bright enough for the fastest descents and broad patterns that let you tell the difference between a dark oil stain and a hole in the pavement. You pay a lot for this type of performance, but the difference between a merely adequate light and a very good one is the difference between being able to go for a night ride and being able to ride fast enough to train at night."

"TurboCat S47; Price: $289; Burn time: 3 hours 8 minutes @ 12 watts, 46 minutes @ 47 watts; Power source: water bottle nicad pack; Comments: This is one of the more finished units, with tidy aluminum quick-release clamps and independently adjustable lights. The lights can't be swiveled side to side, but each has an independent up-down movement. Adjusting the clamps takes some work with a small hex key, but once set, the lights hold their adjustment. The low beam well focused and can be directed right in front of you. The high beam is broad and provides excellent coverage, but at the expense of a considerable shorter burn time."

TC comments: The system mounts right over the stem, so it doesn't need to swivel side to side. The S32 provides longer run time without much sacrifice in performance. Price now $299.
