If you live in a place with rideable winters, or if you work a funky schedule, good lights will double your riding season. Because of that, lights are truly worth more than any other bike accessory you could buy for the same money. Here are our thoughts on four light systems where we explore the advantages of all-bar, all-head, and mixed handlebar/head setups. TurboCat DualSource QRDS30N HITS: Excellent quality and value; best beam combo; all the thinking is done for you. MISSES: Duration is a bit short. PRICE: $300 ($315 as tested with machined QR mount) WEIGHT: 874 grams (bar unit); 830 grams (helmet unit) IDEAL BUYER: No-BS night rider who knows what is needed to ride real trails in the dark. BATTERY: A NiCad unit in a water bottle for the bar light; a NiCad D-cell flat pack for the helmet light. A two-hour duration for both lights. You can save $70 by opting for a pair of lead-acid batteries instead of the NiCads, but you lose almost half-an-hour's run time. You can also upgrade to a NiMH battery pack for the helmet light, for only $5, but you lose a full half-hours duration. LIGHT: Nicely machined light cases for both the 15-watt spot helmet light and the 15-watt flood with maybe the nicest mount in the business. Our bar light came with the optional, $15 machined quick-release mount, which is a nice looking, but not as quick or easy as the hook-and-loop strap system that comes with the base unit. IN THE FIELD: The 15-watt flood on the bar gives bright, even lighting with good penetration distance and beam width for all riding conditions. The helmet spot beam gives you an aimable beam that can reach way out there at speed, or over drops on the interesting stuff. The TurboCat system is a joy to use, working well and looking great, with lots of machined aluminum and little plastic. This is the light for those who simply want to ride, not impress the gullible. IN FACT, THIS COMBO IS MY FAVORITE SYSTEM OF THE BUNCH. TURBOCAT NOTES: For longer run times, a good choice would be the 10W TrailGuide helmet light and the new 10 watt handlebar flood light - 3.1 hours with NiCad batteries. The aluminum QR takes a few minutes to set up the first time, then its a snap to put on and take off in seconds. |
